Volcanic ash from Anak Krakatau has forced widespread airport closures and cargo-flight cancellations across western Indonesia, while the strategically important Sunda Strait maritime corridor remains operational.
The Anak Krakatau eruption has moved beyond a passenger aviation disruption and is now directly affecting Indonesia’s air-freight network.
The key intelligence question is whether cargo movements merely experience short-term delays or whether airlines begin systematically rerouting freight around Jakarta and other affected gateways. Maritime transport through the Sunda Strait currently provides an important point of resilience, with the main ferry corridor continuing to operate.
Anak Krakatau, located in the Sunda Strait between Java and Sumatra, entered a period of heightened eruptive activity beginning on 4 September. Volcanic ash subsequently spread across parts of Banten, Jakarta, West Java and surrounding areas, generating aviation warnings and disrupting flight operations across western Indonesia.1
The disruption intensified as volcanic ash was detected around several airports. Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, Indonesia’s principal international aviation gateway, temporarily suspended operations alongside Halim Perdanakusuma and several regional airports.2
Indonesia’s transport authorities subsequently extended temporary closures affecting eight airports until midnight on 6 September as ash continued to present a risk to aircraft operations.3
The effects have extended well beyond passenger movements. During Soekarno-Hatta’s initial closure period, authorities reported 209 cancelled flights, including 160 domestic, 39 international and 10 cargo flights.4
Later reporting increased the number of affected movements at Soekarno-Hatta to approximately 764 flights, encompassing cancellations, delays, diversions and other operational adjustments across domestic, international and cargo services.5
The significance is not simply the scale of passenger-flight cancellations. Jakarta is one of Indonesia’s principal gateways for international, express, high-value and time-sensitive air freight.
When Soekarno-Hatta closes, disruption can propagate through cargo consolidation, customs processing, warehouse handling, trucking schedules, connecting flights and onward domestic distribution. Even relatively short closures can therefore create effects lasting considerably longer than the aviation restriction itself.
Volcanic ash creates a particularly difficult operating environment because it cannot be managed like conventional bad weather. Ash can damage aircraft engines and other systems, forcing carriers to cancel departures, alter routes, hold aircraft at origin airports or divert movements until airspace is considered safe.
The confirmed cancellation of 10 cargo flights therefore represents an important threshold. The event is no longer solely a passenger travel problem. It is directly affecting commercial freight movement.
Network effects are also becoming visible elsewhere in Indonesia. Disruption involving Jakarta has contributed to cancellations at airports such as Surabaya and Balikpapan as aircraft rotations and scheduled connections are interrupted. This demonstrates how a geographically concentrated ash event can produce operational effects across a much wider aviation network.
The most likely near-term outcome is continued disruption followed by an uneven aviation recovery as airports reopen and airlines reposition aircraft, crews and accumulated cargo.
The greater logistics risk is repeated closure rather than a single interruption.
Volcanic ash distribution is dependent on eruption intensity, altitude and atmospheric conditions. An airport may reopen after conditions improve only to face renewed restrictions if another eruption places ash back into the operating area.
For freight operators, this creates cumulative disruption. Cargo that misses one rotation remains in the network. Shipments accumulate, perishables lose available transit time, express cargo may require rerouting and aircraft or trucking connections can become increasingly misaligned.
The key escalation indicator will therefore be systematic cargo diversion. If dedicated freighters or significant volumes of belly cargo begin moving through alternative Indonesian or regional gateways rather than simply waiting for Jakarta to reopen, the event would be shifting from temporary disruption toward network reconfiguration.
Anak Krakatau’s location creates an important maritime dimension because the volcano sits within the Sunda Strait between Java and Sumatra, one of Indonesia’s major inter-island transport corridors and a maritime connection between the Java Sea and Indian Ocean.
For now, however, maritime transport is considerably less affected than aviation.
Indonesia’s transport authorities reported that the heavily used Merak–Bakauheni ferry corridor remains operational despite the eruption. Vessels have been advised to respect the exclusion area surrounding Anak Krakatau, but ferry services have continued without significant interruption.6
This distinction is analytically important. The current event is not yet a Sunda Strait shipping disruption. Instead, it is an air-logistics disruption occurring alongside a maritime transport system that continues to provide connectivity between Java and Sumatra.
That contrast matters because the next escalation threshold is not simply another cancelled flight. It is whether volcanic activity begins simultaneously constraining aviation, ferry movements or wider commercial navigation through the Sunda Strait.
There is currently no confirmed public carrier-level breakdown identifying which dedicated cargo airlines account for the cargo flights cancelled at Soekarno-Hatta.
Airport authorities have confirmed that cargo operations are included among affected movements, but available reporting does not yet establish whether individual freighter services have been diverted to specific alternative Indonesian or regional airports.
There is also no evidence at present of widespread interruption to merchant shipping through the Sunda Strait.
Merak–Bakauheni ferry operations remain active, and reporting does not indicate closure of the wider strait to commercial traffic.6
The largest uncertainty is whether Anak Krakatau continues generating ash plumes capable of repeatedly entering western Indonesian air corridors after airport operations begin recovering.
The next 24–48 hours will determine whether the disruption remains a recoverable aviation event or begins producing sustained changes in freight routing.
If volcanic activity decreases and Indonesia’s major airports reopen without renewed ash contamination, accumulated cargo should begin moving again, although residual delays may persist as airlines reposition aircraft and clear freight backlogs.
If ash continues entering western Indonesian airspace, repeated airport closures could force more consequential network decisions, including cargo diversion, aircraft repositioning and temporary transfer of freight through alternative Indonesian or regional gateways.
Maritime transport currently provides an important point of resilience. The Sunda Strait ferry corridor remains open, and there is no evidence of widespread merchant-shipping disruption. Any change in that maritime baseline would represent a significant escalation.
