Power & Corridors founder and Editorial Director Dean Mikkelsen joined Pakistan TV Global on 7 September to discuss Iran’s announcement that it intends to establish a new restricted zone across parts of the Gulf and approve new passage routes through the Strait of Hormuz.
The discussion followed comments by Iranian Supreme National Security Council Secretary Mohsen Rezaei that vessels entering the proposed restricted zone could be placed on an Iranian sanctions list, while maps setting out new passage routes through Hormuz are expected to be approved.
During the interview, Mikkelsen discussed what the announcement could mean for maritime movement through the Strait, the continuing contest over access and control around Hormuz, and the wider implications for commercial shipping amid the continuing U.S.–Iran confrontation.
The proposed corridor is particularly significant because it comes as the Strait is already operating under extraordinary conditions. Iran is seeking to establish its own rules governing maritime movement while the United States maintains its blockade of Iranian shipping, leaving commercial vessels operating between competing security and political pressures.
The conversation also examined the practical question behind Iran’s announcement: whether the proposed arrangements can actually provide a workable route for commercial vessels through one of the world’s most important maritime chokepoints.
